The Difference Between a Man and a Woman's Skin

Initially, one may not believe there are any differences between a man's and a woman's skin. However, there are several differences that are worth noting and reflect how a man should care for his skin and what products he should use.

Skin Type

It has been studied and documented that men tend to have thicker and oilier skin than women.

As a result, skin care products should have the durability and efficacy to penetrate the thicker skin layers to provide optimal results.

Also because male skin is oilier they require more robust and efficient cleansing agents.

Pore Structure

Men tend to have a larger pore structure than women.

As a result they are more prone to getting dirt and debris into their pores and are more prone to acne and blackheads.
Therefore, men should be especially conscious to wash and tone on a regular basis.

Facial Hair

The majority of men have facial hair and shave on a daily basis.

As a result they exfoliate on a regular basis and therefore do not need as harsh an exfoliating agent as women.

In addition, hair follicles exude more oil than other glands and contribute to a man's oilier skin and need for more robust cleansing agents. Also, there is a large population of men that suffer from ingrown hairs and are in need of stronger shave and after-shave products.

Oil Composition

The composition of male skin oil tends to be more dense and complex than a woman's due to the presence of testosterone. Therefore, they require a more effective cleansing agent than women.

Environmental Abuses

Due to lack of knowledge and education on how to treat their skin, men tend to suffer more environmental damage than women.
Harsh sun and wind exposure can do irreparable damage to a man's skin. Soaps, alcohol-based after-shaves are especially drying and have adverse effects on the skin.
